Move the money, Grand Rapids!

Tell the Grand Rapids City Commission to pass a “Move the Money” Resolution.

Tell the Grand Rapids City Commission to follow in Hamtramck's footsteps by passing a "Move The Money" resolution that urges Congress and Biden to divest from war and fund our community instead.

In 2023, Biden passed a grotesque imperialist budget of $886 billion. This level of spending is more than the military budget of China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, South Korea, Japan, and Ukraine combined. This does not include the millions of tax dollars that Biden has bypassed Congress to give to Israel or the billions more that Congress wants to give the Zionist occupation forces in Palestine. This is despite the growing majority calling for ending weapon shipments to Israel.

This is a SECOND chance for the City Commissioners to do the right thing. Last year, residents sent over 4,895 letters to the City Commission calling for a ceasefire resolution. At the time, Zionist forces had killed 12,000+ people. Since then, we have continued to attend the commission’s public meetings and requested individual meetings with commissioners to discuss a resolution. However, the City Commissioners continue to ignore and reject our meeting requests or give us far-off dates for potential meeting times. Meanwhile, Israeli Occupation Forces have now murdered over 30,000 people and displaced over 1.5 million, all of whom are now facing severe starvation, disease, and non-stop bombardments funded by our tax dollars against our will.

U.S. serviceman and martyr for Palestine Aaron Bushnell said, “Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?

The Grand Rapids City Commissioners answered this question by opposing a ceasefire resolution. Commissioner Drew Robbins, Milinda Ysasi, and now-resigned Commissioner Nathaniel Moody claimed the matter was beyond the scope of a city, yet that same evening the cities of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights passed similar resolutions.

In the weeks since, 10 additional Michigan cities and 3 counties have passed ceasefire resolutions, including Detroit, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Flint, Ferndale, Hamtramck, Canton Township, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor; and the counties of Washtenaw, Wayne, and Kalamazoo.

Grand Rapids is currently the biggest city in Michigan that has not issued any sort of statement, despite a record 17% of Democratic voters in Grand Rapids who voted "uncommitted" to protest Biden's support of ethnic cleansing in Palestine.

TAKE ACTION: Tell our city commissioners to pass a “Move the Money” resolution demanding Biden, Senator Gary Peters, Senator Debbie Statenow, and U.S. Congresswoman Hilary Scholten stop forcing working-class families to fund a genocide.
