Maui Planning Commission - H3H4 1st Batch

The fight to reclaim housing is still ongoing and the need for long-term housing options is as dire as ever.

A couple months ago, we asked you to submit testimony to the Maui County Council on Resolutions 26-110 and 26-111, which contained lists of Minatoya properties the Council proposed for H-3/H-4 zoning.

We supported many of the properties until Council members last-minute added properties to the lists that did not meet clear, objective criteria. We cannot stand for political favors or a process that compromises what should have been a clean, transparent list.

The Council ultimately passed both resolutions. Now, the next chapter in the fight to reclaim housing is here  and we are ready to hold the line.

This Tuesday, September 22, the Maui Planning Commission will begin hearing the first batch of properties proposed for H-3/H-4 hotel zoning.

For years, our community has fought to restore apartment-zoned properties to their intended purpose: long-term, multifamily housing — not short-term vacation rentals.

Bill 9 was the result of years of organizing, testimony, petitions, and community members showing up again and again. We fought hard for that outcome.

Now we need to show up again.

Our position is clear: rezoning these properties to H-3/H-4 permanently removes them from the long-term housing pool. Once that land is converted to hotel zoning, reclaiming it as housing becomes that much harder.

All three Planning Commissions voted against establishing H-3/H-4 districts. Now they are being asked to consider these properties individually.

We are asking Commissioners to look at each property carefully and consider the long-term housing consequences of every decision.

📢 SUBMIT TESTIMONY NOW.

📢 SHOW UP TUESDAY.

📢 MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD.

When in doubt, vote it down.

Don’t dismantle the hard work our community has fought so hard to achieve.
