Congress has passed H.R.1, the Big Bad Budget bill and the President has signed it into law. Why? To pay for extending President Trump's tax scam: take away funds from vital social safety net programs to create permanent tax breaks for the wealthy and to fund the Administration's mass immigration detention and deportation scheme that is terrorizing communities. This harms our neighbors' safety and security, takes healthy food off American tables, and compromises the well-being of mothers, babies, seniors--all of our neighbors who are eligible for Medicaid and Medicare.
- Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania research determined that $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts plus other health care cuts—the largest in history—will result in the deaths of 51,000 people per year, including:
- 18,200 people who are eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare,
- 20,000 people who will lose health care coverage due to the elimination of the Affordable Care Act's premium tax credit
- 13,000 deaths due to staffing cuts at nursing homes.
At a time when people in every U.S. state struggle to afford the basic costs of living, Congress should find ways--in our shared budget--to create solutions for the many, not show preference for the wealthy few.
- Urban Institute data shows that 5.3 million families will lose $25 or more per month in SNAP benefits, with the average such family losing $146 a month in help paying for food.
- 62% of the families experiencing these very large SNAP losses include children.
