No Carbon Capture and Storage

How can you spot a fake climate bill?

  • When it's introduced by climate-denier Senator Gene Yaw
  • When its supporters include the same members of the Oil & Gas Caucus who just said the industry should be producing four times the methane gas it's currently producing here
  • When it has to do with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

SB831 fits all three criteria. It is an extremely consequential bill that would usher in the next generation of fossil fuels masquerading as climate solutions. And it would do so while stripping people of their ability to say no to storage of CO2 under their property, allowing the industry to trespass on private property to do seismic testing, shifting the liability for anything that goes wrong to the state (a.k.a. you, the taxpayer), and moving the state one step closer to getting primacy over the class of injection wells that would be used to move the CO2 from (a new generation of ) pipelines to your pore space. (This last one is particularly weird because 1) PA has never had primacy over any class of injection wells and 2) the DEP can barely do the job it's supposed to be doing now, and 3) those Oil & Gas Caucus members rallied with Senator Yaw this week to say that the way to get all that extra gas production is to get government out of the way.)

SB831 has passed in the Senate and was voted out of the House Consumer Protection, Technology, and Utilities committee this week. A weak amendment that does nothing to improve the bill passed on the House floor today before they recessed for the weekend. No amendment will turn this bad bill into a good one.

Please send a letter to your state representative to let them know you oppose SB831.
