No federal school vouchers for Illinois!

No federal vouchers for Illinois

No matter our zipcode, our religion or our race, what most Illinois families want is a well-resourced public school right where they live and play. Strong public schools benefit all of our communities.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration wants to take funding away from public schools that welcome and educate all kids, and give billions in federal tax dollars to private schools that can—and do—discriminate and exclude.

The new federal school voucher program is a key education policy goal of the Trump administration, and it’s part of their plan to privatize the public education system as a whole.

Each state can choose whether to participate in the federal voucher program, a decision that our Governor and the IL General Assembly have the power to make.

We'd like Governor Pritzker to publicly commit to keeping Illinois out of a program that will fund discrimination and harm our public schools. And we'd like the General Assembly to put into state law a prohibition on Illinois participating.

You can use the form to the right to send letters to Governor Pritzker and your state senator and rep urging them to keep federal vouchers out of Illinois.

Update 3/7/26: There are two bills currently in the Illinois Senate with Democratic sponsors, one would opt Illinois into the program, the other would prohibit Illinois from participating. More on those bills here. (The letter you send to your Senator asks them to co-sponsor SB 3966, the bill that prohibits Illinois from participating.)

In January more than 45 organizations wrote to Gov. Pritzker urging him to opt out of the program. You can read that letter here.
