Your Letter

ICE is a dysfunctional, lawless agency that has decided to wage war against anyone who opposes their brutality or their mission, they dehumanize people, and they are murdering people in our streets. I strongly support a NO vote on a DHS funding bill that does not meet all of the Democrats 10 Demands. I further strongly support repealing the $170 million appropriated to ICE from HR 1. Now is the time to stand together against tyranny, even if it means shutting down DHS.

The Constitution of the United States gives all people in this country specific guaranteed rights. These include the right to peaceably assemble, freedom of speech and religion, freedom of the press, and the right to petition the government with grievances. In each city where ICE has descended upon, the people have exercised those rights and ICE has sought to suppress them with tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, flash grenades, and other incendiary devices. Multiple Federal Courts in both Chicago and Minneapolis have confirmed this and issued restraining orders to ICE for this conduct. Despite restraining orders, ICE continues this practice, and have now escalated their violence by murdering two people in broad daylight while being filmed. They are brazen. To top it all off, the DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and other top DHS officials lied about the events on national TV, defending the agents that committed the murder, trying to convince us we did not see the events on videos from bystanders.

It is clear DHS and ICE are waging war against the people that do not agree with their racist policies and actions. They kick in doors and break car windows, without judicial warrants. They walk through the streets patrolling neighborhoods approaching people of color demanding to see their proof of citizenship. Do we now live in a “show me your papers” country?  According to this Senate report, they have arrested and detained numerous US citizens with their racial profiling and excessive use of force tactics. ICE is out of control, and I am not convinved they can be reformed.
Defunding ICE and abolishing the agency is what we need to aim for. There are now more Americans who support abolishing ICE than there are who oppose it. Among Democrats, an overwhelming 76% want to abolish the agency in its entirety. 46%, a plurality of all surveyed, support abolishing ICE. The people’s voice is clear, and party leadership must take action to be in touch with its own voters. 
My heart breaks for the people that are being held by ICE behind closed doors. We see how they behave in public. What are they doing in private? ICE has shown itself to be a dehumanizng organization. ICE is currently holding around 73,000 people behind prison doors in detention centers run by for profit prison corporations. 3800 of them are children. This all just seems wrong.

Many of the ten demands are already part of ICE and CBP standards; the problem is a lack of enforcement. Other Democrats have been issuing far more significant demands of ICE in recent weeks. In fact, the entire Democratic caucus, plus two Republicans, already voted to strip ICE of the money allotted to it in Trump’s “big beautiful bill” and re-allocate it to fund Medicare. That measure failed by a slim margin, but it makes clear that the ceiling for our demands should be exponentially higher than minor tweaks around the edges of ICE, particularly tweaks that are nearly unenforceable.

As long as Trump’s secret police and kidnapping force is getting tens of billions of dollars, as long as their funding triples this year, they will continue to be a violent force terrorizing this country and executing people both in the streets and in their detention camps. The power of Congress is intended to come from its control of the purse strings, and meaningfully pulling funds from the federal agents kidnapping, terrorizing, and killing people is the bare minimum we should expect from our government. ICE’s giant appropriation through HR1 needs to be repealed.

Now is not the time for half-measures. Now is not the time to accept phony pseudo-conciliatory gestures from the regime, or from the party that claims to oppose fascism. ICE is killing people both in the open and out of sight. Their terror continues unabated. They continue to defy the law, invade our homes, and attack those who dare to question them. Ground yourself in this difficult reality — refuse the allure of false hope in the face of a real, deadly authoritarian onslaught.
