Gil Troy Defends Ethnic Cleansing—And Our Universities Are Hosting Him
IJV Carleton, SJP Carleton, and INSAF uOttawa strongly condemn the upcoming panel featuring Gil Troy, organized by the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics (NECA) at the University of Ottawa. Under the false pretence of “celebrating Zionism and the values of the academy,” this event provides a platform for a figure who openly supports ethnic cleansing, vilifies student activists, and justifies the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Gil Troy is not an academic voice engaging in good-faith debate. He is an ideologue who spreads dehumanizing rhetoric and incites against students who dare to challenge Zionism. In his own words, he:
- is "unapologetic" about Israel's genocide, calling the murder of 20,000 "justified actions in self-defense." (February 16, 2024)
- compares university students to Nazis, stating that he will not "fraternize with Nazis or racists or their cheerleaders. Similarly, I would never hire, work with, work for, learn from or befriend someone who delighted in these crimes or finds Israel “entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.”" (October 19, 2023)
At a time when Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and anti-Zionist Jewish students are facing doxxing, threats, and academic repression, it is outrageous that uOttawa and Carleton are hosting someone who actively incites against them.
This is not about academic freedom—this is about providing a platform for hate. Universities should be spaces for rigorous intellectual inquiry, not for figures who glorify war crimes and encourage the demonization of students.
We call on students, faculty, and community members to reject this event and make it clear that Gil Troy and his dangerous rhetoric are not welcome in our academic spaces.
