Support In-Law Suites, Homes Near Transit, and Community-Focused Businesses

An ADU in DC

Send an email to the Zoning Commission and tell them to support In-Law Suites, Homes Near Transit, and Community-Focused Businesses.

D.C.’s Zoning Commission is considering changes to the city’s zoning code that will help address our housing shortage. The proposal is a good first step in that it removes some of the obstacles that stand in the way of homebuyers and renters alike having more housing choices and affordable options. But there’s much more the Zoning Commission can do in this moment.

We believe the Zoning Commission should take this opportunity to do three things:

  1. Let more homeowners build in-law suites on their property, both providing affordable options to renters and offering homeowners another pathway to build wealth.

  2. Remove restrictive parking requirements that limit the number of homes near public transit hubs.

  3. Allow more buildings to house community-focused businesses, like childcare centers, so that families have what they need in their communities.

The Zoning Commission is more likely to adopt these changes if it hears from D.C. residents—including renters, aspiring homeowners, and current homeowners—about why they support them. On the next page, we have a draft email you can send to the Zoning Commission with specifics about these proposals.

Just as important, though, is to add your personal housing story: How has D.C.’s housing shortage affected you? How would your life improve if there were more housing choices and more affordable options? How would more vibrant and walkable communities change your life?

Together, we can help create the city we want—one that’s inclusive to all families, that is affordable, and that fosters community.
