Open Letter to Governor Tina Kotek
Oregon’s public universities are in crisis. Since Measures 5 and 50 gutted the state’s revenue base, Oregon has fallen to 37th in the nation in higher-education funding. This spring, all three major universities were nearly on strike simultaneously—the sign of a system at the breaking point.
Without new revenue, Oregon’s higher-education system cannot sustain its mission. We face another cycle of layoffs, program closures, ballooning class sizes, and worsening inequities, all of which hamper enrollment and worsen the outlook for these institutions and all Oregonians. Meanwhile, three Oregon billionaires hold more wealth than the bottom half of Oregonians combined—twice over.
Join us in calling on Governor Kotek to meet with Oregon academic labor leaders and members before November 24, 2025, to develop a statewide plan to: raise sustainable revenue for higher education, and prevent the layoffs of more than 200 mission-critical faculty and staff at Portland State University.
