ICE has operated for years with extraordinary power and almost no accountability. The result has been predictable and devastating: excessive force, civil rights violations, secrecy, and a culture that treats abuse as collateral damage.

Now, many Democrats in the Senate are standing up. . Democratic senators, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have said they will not support a bill that funds the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without fundamental changes in how ICE operates..

But words are not enough and senators are under extreme pressure to fold, especially because blocking the bill could result in another government shutdown. That’s why senators must continue to hear from us everyday.

As long as Congress continues to approve funding without enforceable reforms, ICE’s reign of terror will continue.

This is the leverage point. Democrats must refuse to fund ICE unless reforms are written into law and backed by real enforcement. No more funding first, accountability later.

Democrats have the power to force this choice and, at this moment, some Republicans just might join them. Every member of Congress needs to know the public is watching.
