Florida lawmakers are pushing HB 1539, a dangerous bill that would let political operatives ban books from school libraries with zero expertise and no clear standards. If passed, this law would let anyone challenge and remove books just by claiming they're "harmful to minors"—no evidence required.

This bill throws out decades of legal precedent and opens the floodgates to censorship. Beloved books, historical accounts, and stories centering communities of color could be erased from classrooms and libraries. Even fact-based works that address racism, genocide, or injustice could be targeted simply because someone finds them uncomfortable or “inappropriate” for students.
