Tell Treasury that you oppose the private school voucher program. Demand taxpayer money be used for public education.
The Trump administration is moving to subsidize private school tuition with federal tax dollars while restricting states from demanding stronger safeguards. Tell the Treasury Department to reject its proposed federal voucher rule.
The program offers donors a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions to organizations that distribute education scholarships. It would reduce federal revenue available for public education and other essential services while helping pay private tuition, including for families whose children already attend private schools.
Treasury’s proposal would prohibit participating states from limiting the program to public school students. States seeking help with tutoring, supplies, or other expenses for public school families would also have to approve qualifying organizations that fund private school vouchers.
The program does not require participating private schools to provide the same civil rights protections students receive in public schools. Students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, and families facing religious discrimination could encounter exclusion at institutions receiving taxpayer-subsidized tuition. Families who voluntarily place children with disabilities in private schools generally lose the individual entitlement to a free appropriate public education under IDEA.
The proposed rule also restricts states from imposing stronger operating requirements on scholarship organizations. Its financial reporting provisions do not establish the comprehensive protections students need or the public accountability taxpayers deserve.
Public schools educate 9 out of 10 students. Federal resources should strengthen those schools and support every child.
Submit a public comment by December 1 amplifying your opposition to the private school voucher program. Tell the administration to instead create meaningful regulations that allow states to use the money for public education, regulate Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs), and ensure taxpayer money is not spent fraudulently.
