Oppose SB475: Further Reduce the Use of Student Data In Teacher Evaluations

URGENT: This may be our last good chance to affect the language in SB475 regarding the use of student data in teacher evaluations.

SB475 will be heard in the Assembly Committee on Education this Thursday (May 2, 2019) at 1:30pm. SB475 would make 20% of a teacher’s evaluation based on SLO/SLG's next school year, even though over an overwhelming majority of Nevada teachers believe the most appropriate percentage of SLO/SLGs to be used in an evaluation is 10% or less. (NSEA Survey 2019).

After several contentious votes, the Teachers and Leaders Council (TLC) settled on the 20% figure, even though the TLC members who are current classroom teachers argued for a lower level of student data to be included in teacher evaluations.

We were disheartened that members of the Senate Committee on Education ignored the clarion voice of classroom teachers who opposed the 20% level in SB475. While the vote of the Senate Floor Vote did not reflect classroom teachers on this hot-button issue, our stories about problems with the use of SLO/SLGs in teacher evaluations are compelling.

We now have another chance to reduce the percentage of SLO/SLGs in our evaluations! As it heads to the Assembly for a new hearing, we need you to email the Assemblymembers and ask them to further reduce SLO/SLG’s considered in your evaluations. Send them a message and please make sure to explain concerns you have experienced with the SLO/SLG process
