Opposing Proposed Amendments to the Council Procedure Bylaw
The Township of Langley is considering amendments to its Council Procedure Bylaw. The proposed changes would lower the threshold for censuring elected officials from a two-thirds supermajority to a simple majority, and remove the requirement for an equalized Acting Mayor rotation.
These changes lower the bar for using formal discipline as a political tool, raise the risk of costly legal disputes that residents will pay for, and allow ceremonial roles to be allocated based on political alignment rather than fair turn-taking.
The Province is also finalizing a standardized municipal code of conduct framework, meaning any local rule changes pushed through now will likely need revisiting soon.
Completing the letter below will send an email to all Township councillors as well as the mayor. It also submits your feedback directly to the Township's Legislative Services Department as part of the formal feedback process defined by the Township. Your comments will be formally shared with councillors before the meeting.
