OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED CALVERT SCHOOL BOARD POLICY 2305 & 2315

How do you feel about book banning in Calvert County Public Schools? Do you feel other parents should be able to decide what your child can or cannot read?

On June 15th, the Calvert County Board of Education will be voting on a drastic revision of our current policy for selecting and purchasing instructional and library materials, Policy Statements 2305 and 2315. You can find the proposed documents at

Everything in red print is a proposed change.

Under our current guidance, which is thoughtfully implemented by our specially trained and highly qualified school librarians, CCPS libraries were recognized as the best in the nation in 2021. Why would we “fix” a system that is the best in the country?

Under the new proposal, an enormous bureaucracy of committees would determine what books would be permitted in our schools’ libraries, with librarians given one voice per committee. The prevailing opinions and personal beliefs of the majority would be the standard for book consideration, rather than the professional standards and curating resources our librarians now employ to provide our students with a broad and enriching choice of reading and research materials. The proposed policy would make it virtually impossible to meet the educational needs of each child, as required by law.
