Pass HB 6607, the bipartisan "Lights Out CT" bill to save birds

We did it!! H.B. 6607 was unanimously voted out of the Senate tonight!

***

H.B. 6607 is a bipartisan, money-saving bill that will save the lives of thousands of migratory birds in Connecticut by requiring all state-owned buildings to shut off their non-essential outdoor lights from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am. The CT Office of Fiscal Analysis estimates it will save our state at least $1.3 MILLION PER YEAR. And we estimate it could save 4.4 MILLION POUNDS of CO2 per year.

Birds need our help! Reports show wide-spread population declines of birds over the past half-century, resulting in the cumulative LOSS OF 2-3 BILLION BIRDS across a wide range of species and habitats. These declines are not restricted to rare and threatened species, but also common and wide-spread birds, like the Black-Capped Chickadee. Many birds that migrate through Connecticut, like the Red-Headed Woodpecker and Bicknell's Thrush, are facing threats of extinction.

Studies show that a simple thing like dimming nonessential lights at a building after 11 p.m. can cut window collisions in half -- and remove a confusing, unnecessary anthropogenic threat from the natural environment, to help give migratory birds safe passage.

Thank you for taking action TODAY to protect migratory birds!

Sincerely,

The Lights Out Team
