Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act NOW!

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was designed to require that states with a history of discrimination could not change their voting procedures without first securing “preclearance” to ensure proposed changes wouldn't harm minority voters. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that the formula used to identify which states must have "preclearance" needed to be updated. The John Lewis Advancement Act will do exactly that.

While many anticipated the Supreme Court's disastrous decision to gut the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) this spring, that doesn't make it less devastating. Here's an important next step.

We're asking you to write letters to your US Senators and House Representatives. Demand that they protect voting rights by immediately passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This letter-writing tool makes it pretty easy!

I am writing to share my support for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and to urge you to support it as well.

The John Lewis Advancement Act is designed to identify places where voting discrimination is recent, widespread, and persistent. After the recent Supreme Court ruling that gutted the 1965 Voting Rights Act, states like Louisiana and Virginia immediately took actions to over-ride the wishes of the voters in favor of racially gerrymandered congressional maps.

In this era of politically- and racially-driven gerrymandering, it is necessary to modernize and codify the guardrails that will protect the rights of ALL voters. Afterall, the right to free and fair elections is the backbone of our Democracy.

I am asking you to protect my right to free and fair elections by supporting the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
