Senator Robert Stivers introduced Senate Bill 6 early yesterday and it is now on the legislative fast track with a committee hearing already scheduled for TODAY. The bill, misleadingly labeled as “Paycheck Protection” would essentially prohibit unions from lobbying legislators on behalf of the members we serve.   School districts and corporations could pay for lobbying, but all unions would be prohibited from doing so.

The bill is also directly attacks all unions by requiring unions to inconvenience their members by signing them up for dues deduction every single year. If this bill passes, your payment for your gym membership can automatically renew each year, but your payment to your professional Association could not. The bill (which mirrors bills in other Republican controlled states and is backed by the right-wing legislation group, ALEC) will significantly tilt the playing field against employees, in favor of management.

This bill is part of a nationwide assault on public sector unions designed to diminish the voice of working people and applies to ALL workers who belong to a union: police, firefighters, construction employees, auto workers, and many, many others. This is not about protecting you – it’s about looking out for corporations and management.
