People Over Pavement
In April 2022, City Council and Housing Catalyst agreed to building affordable housing on the city-owned parking lot at Remington and Oak St. By early 2025, plans had taken shape for over 75 mixed-income affordable apartments and missing-middle condos.
The proposal was set to be reviewed by the City Council Finance Committee in June. However, in a tale as old as NIMBY time, a few influential Old Town business owners began pressuring city staff over the potential loss of convenient parking. In response to this opposition, the Remington proposal was quietly pulled from the committee agenda—despite the fact that Old Town has three city-owned parking garages, six additional public lots, and over 3,000 on-street public parking spaces.
But these homes aren't dead yet. City Council has scheduled a special work session for June 5th to review the project with city staff and Housing Catalyst.
Fort Collins needs more affordable housing. Please email City Council and ask them to prioritize People Over Pavement.
