Prioritize Fair and Timely Settlement of the Teacher Contract

Background on Contract Negotiations

Contract negotiations for both teachers and paraprofessionals in the HWRSD began in November 2024. Since that time, educators have been working diligently to reach fair agreements that reflect their professionalism, the high expectations placed on them, and the needs of their families and students.

Progress has been slow. The existing contracts for teachers and paraprofessionals expired on June 31, 2025. In response to the lack of movement, the Hampden Wilbraham Education Association filed for mediation in November 2025 in an effort to move the process forward.

However, opportunities for meaningful negotiations have remained limited. The School Committee was available for only one bargaining meeting in January, and to date has committed to just one mediation session in February. This limited availability has significantly delayed progress toward resolution.

The prolonged negotiation process affects more than contracts alone. Extended uncertainty impacts educator morale, staff retention, and the district’s ability to remain competitive with neighboring communities. Ultimately, these challenges affect the stability and quality of education provided to HWRSD students.

Families and community members are encouraged to voice their concerns and urge the School Committee to prioritize timely, fair, and competitive settlements. Strong advocacy, increased mediation sessions, and full commitment to supporting educators through both negotiations and the budget process are essential to ensuring that Hampden-Wilbraham schools continue to thrive.

In addition to sending an email here, you can attend one of the currently scheduled School Committee meetings on Feb. 4 and Feb. 26 at 6:30 at Minnechaug HS and even speak during the public comment. The February 26 meeting is supposed to be a “budget roundtable” with other town committees and leaders.
