Protect funding for safe streets projects in SFMTA’s next budget

As the SFMTA works to fill a budget gap for its operating costs in FY 26/27, a dangerous option has been proposed: diverting $40 million in capital funding designated for street safety projects.

Walk SF raised the alarm in early February, and many of you have since emailed the SFMTA Board and SFMTA Director Julie Kirschbaum to find a different solution than sacrificing our safety.

At the February 17 SFMTA Board meeting, the $40 million proposal was lowered to $20 million and it was said that this would be sourced from other capital sources than safe streets. But nothing is final until a budget vote in April, which is why we must keep urging leaders to protect safe street capital funds.

Lives are at stake every day on streets that aren’t yet sufficiently designed for our safety. Now is the time to do more safe streets projects, not fewer. This is especially true when the SFMTA has shown that where it invests in these projects, crash rates, speeds, and close-calls are notably reduced.

Email the SFMTA Board now to protect street safety capital funding in the FY 26/27 budget.
