Protect Agricultural Research and Rural Jobs – Reverse the Closure of the Nappan Research Farm
The Nappan Research Farm in Nova Scotia has been a cornerstone of agricultural innovation in Atlantic Canada since 1887. As one of Canada’s original Dominion Experimental Farms, it provides regionally specific research that helps farmers improve livestock productivity, strengthen forage systems, and adapt to changing climate conditions.
Agricultural research must reflect local soil, climate, and farming realities. What works in Western Canada often does not translate to the Maritimes. The work done at Nappan supports sustainable beef production, improved pasture resilience, reduced reliance on pharmaceuticals in livestock, and research on carbon sequestration and methane emissions.
Closing the facility would mean the loss of skilled public sector jobs and would disrupt long-term research projects that have taken decades to build. It would also weaken agricultural research capacity in Atlantic Canada and remove a key resource that farmers rely on to stay productive, competitive, and environmentally sustainable.
The Nappan Research Farm is not only a workplace—it is a critical part of the Atlantic region’s food system, rural economy, and agricultural future.
