Protect DC Families and Pass a Budget That Reflects DC Values

DC has the resources to build an economy that works for everyone, but that requires making the wealthiest residents and corporations pay their fair share in taxes.

DC residents overwhelmingly support raising revenue from wealthy individuals and large out-of-state businesses that profit from doing business in the District but avoid paying their fair share in taxes. This is even more true when that revenue would be used to prevent cuts to essential programs and services that make DC a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

But right now, the DC Council is considering devastating cuts proposed by Mayor Bowser to programs that support our neighbors, including child care, paid family leave, health care, housing, cash assistance (TANF), and food support. With cuts to programs and services like these, many more families will struggle to make ends meet, especially amid federal layoffs and rising costs driven by inflation.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The Council must reject Mayor Bowser’s harmful cuts by raising revenue to fund a budget that reflects DC values. Urge the Council to use all the resources that exist and act by:

  • Taxing passive income from wealth held by households earning more than $500,000 per year by passing a 3% Wealth Proceeds Tax

  • Supporting a Business Activity Tax to close loopholes that allow some out-of-state businesses, including large lobbying firms, to avoid paying DC taxes even while profiting from doing business in the District

  • Rejecting Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy by permanently “decoupling” DC’s tax code to save the District over a hundred million of dollars a year so we can continue to fund essential services

Tell the DC Council to support these and other progressive revenue solutions that would prevent harmful cuts our neighbors cannot afford, and to reject predatory proposals like expanding gambling through “iGaming,” which would disproportionately harm families and communities who can least afford it.

Every dollar the DC Council raises is a dollar it doesn’t have to cut. DC voters overwhelmingly support this approach. Tell the Council to listen to residents and act now and reject these cuts!
