Public schools are the heart of our communities and the foundation of our democracy. Nearly 90% of children in the U.S. attend public schools. But right now, a dangerous proposal in Congress threatens to gut them. The Reconciliation Bill includes a massive $20 billion tax cut for billionaires to fund discriminatory private school vouchers. At the same time, Congress is slashing Medicaid, school meals, and other public school supports.

Cuts to public schools, Medicaid, SNAP and school meals would devastate support systems that millions of students rely on to survive and succeed.

The proposed federal voucher bill would funnel public tax dollars into private and religious schools—schools that can reject students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, or anyone they choose. These schools aren’t accountable to the public, and voucher programs have repeatedly been shown to waste taxpayer money. It would also give wealthy donors an unprecedented tax write-off and a loophole to evade capital gains tax.
