Protect Fair Education in New York: Ask for a Balanced Amendment to Bill A02484

Your Voice Matters: Help Protect Fair and Balanced Education in New York !

Turkic Americans and allies to ask for your voice on an important education issue in New York State.

New York Assembly Bill A02484 proposes mandatory instruction on the Holocaust and other historical atrocities. While educating students about human rights and historical suffering is important, this bill includes a specific “Armenian Genocide” module that presents one political narrative as a settled legal fact—despite the absence of a ruling by an international court.

Unlike the Holocaust, the events of 1915–1917 have not been legally classified as genocide by an international tribunal under the United Nations Genocide Convention. Historians and legal scholars continue to debate how these tragic events should be defined, especially given the complex conditions of World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Teaching this topic in a one-sided way risks turning education into politics. It also excludes the shared suffering of many communities during that period, including Turks, Armenians, Kurds, Jews, Azeris, Circassians, and others.

We believe:

  • Public education should be fact-based, balanced, and inclusive

  • Schools should clearly separate legally established genocides from historical events that remain debated

  • Students deserve to learn history with context, multiple perspectives, and academic honesty

For these reasons, we respectfully ask New York officials to remove the “Armenian Genocide” module from A02484, or revise it to reflect its unresolved legal status and include diverse scholarly viewpoints.

📣 Your participation matters.
By sending a respectful email to New York State officials, you help protect:

  • Academic integrity

  • Fair representation of history

  • Trust in public education

Please take a moment to share your perspective and ask for a balanced amendment to this bill.

Thank you for standing up for fair, honest, and inclusive education.
