NCC ACTION ALERT: Protect Food Access — Oppose the Farm Bill Without SNAP Protections

More than 2.5 million people have already lost SNAP benefits, and Congress is considering a farm bill that fails to restore that support.

This week, the House Agriculture Committee is considering the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (H.R. 7567), a proposal that reauthorizes key agricultural and nutrition programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). While the bill includes updates to program administration, it fails to strengthen the support families need to afford food.

At a time when food insecurity remains high, this approach falls short. SNAP is the nation’s most effective anti-hunger program, yet more than 2.5 million people have lost benefits since H.R. 1, the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” was enacted last year. This proposal fails to restore those benefits, address rising food costs, or expand eligibility for families who need help.

What This Bill Will Do

• Focus on administrative changes instead of increasing SNAP benefits
• Shift more of the cost of food assistance onto states, putting pressure on them to reduce access
• Provide limited support without addressing rising food costs or expanding eligibility

Who Will Be Harmed

This legislation fails to meet the needs of:
• Low-income families struggling with rising grocery costs
• Seniors on fixed incomes who rely on SNAP to afford food
• Rural communities with limited access to affordable, healthy options
• Working families who do not qualify under current eligibility rules but still face food insecurity

As more of the financial burden shifts to states, they will be forced to make difficult budget decisions that reduce access to SNAP—meaning more families will lose the benefits they rely on to afford food. SNAP is our nation’s most effective anti-hunger program, and weakening access to it will only deepen food insecurity.

TAKE ACTION TODAY

Contact your Representative or a member of the House Agriculture Committee by email or phone at (202) 224-3121, and urge them to oppose the current farm bill unless it strengthens SNAP and protects food access.

Sample Script:
“My name is [Name], and I am a constituent from [City/State]. I urge you to oppose the current farm bill unless it strengthens SNAP, gives states more time to manage the added costs, and protects food access. Families are already struggling to afford food and more will lose the benefits they rely on. Please make sure any final bill supports both farmers and families.”

Our faith tradition calls us to care for our neighbors and ensure that everyone has access to the food they need to live with dignity. Any farm bill must reflect that moral responsibility by protecting and strengthening SNAP for those most in need.
