Draft Letter:

Dear Department of Toxic Substances Control & Board of Environmental Safety,

I am a worried resident who is concerned about the hazardous waste facility Phibro-Tech in Santa Fe Springs’ Los Nietos neighborhood. I write to urge you to deny Phibro-Tech’s permit renewal, as it has had a history of violating hazardous waste laws and harming workers. I believe that reckless, polluting facilities like Phibro-Tech should NOT be allowed to violate laws and continue to contaminate our community.

Phibro-Tech is one of California’s largest hazardous waste treatment and recycling facilities that has been operating with an expired permit from DTSC since 1996. The fact that this facility has continued to operate while violating laws in the predominantly working class Latino community of Los Nietos is unjust.

Denying Phibro-Tech’s permit renewal is an actionable step to take to properly enforce hazardous waste laws and protect our neighbors. Thank you.

Best,
