Protect Vermont Public Education Legislative Outreach Day

Elementary students face a chalkboard, their backs turned to the camera. The chalkboard reads "Protect Vermont Public Education - Demand School funding that: Prioritizes Students Learning, Takes the tax burden off Hard Working Vermonters, Make the rich pay their fair share, Maintains Local Community Control

We want all Vermont children to have access to high-quality education. We know that Vermont’s public education funding system needs an overhaul, but the plan proposed by Secretary Saunders does not center the needs of children across the state.

We, VT school workers, students, parents and community members must reach out to our representatives to tell them how we feel about Scott and Saunder's plan to "transform" our education system.

Our concerns with Saunder's plan:

  • Jeopardizes families access to quality public education, and the livelihoods of those who work in our schools - bus drivers, cafeteria workers, facilities staff, para educators, and teachers alike.
  • Will disrupt our student's progress in developing their social, emotional, and academic skills as we recover from COVID's impact.
  • Keeps the tax burden on working and middle class Vermonters, while the wealthiest property owners pay far lower than their fair share.

We say no to Saunders, and yes to a plan that:

  • Moves to an income based education funding system that makes the wealthiest Vermonters pay their share, thus providing an immediate tax relief to middle and working class Vermonters.
  • Protects our most vulnerable students, and maintains hard working Vermonter's job stability.
  • Maintains local, democratic control of our schools.
