1,000 Signatures for Raise the Age and Clean Slate: Help us get to this goal!
The MA State Senate passed an amendment to the Economic Development bill which would raise
the age of juvenile court jurisdiction to include 18-year-olds only (see coverage of the vote here). This is the closest we have been to see Raise the Age pass before the year ends! But because it did not pass the House, it is subject to a six-member conference committee who will negotiate on what makes it in the final bill and what gets cut out.
The Senate also passed legislation that would bring Massachusetts to the 21st century by automating the sealing of eligible juvenile and adult criminal records rather than requiring each person to go to court one-by-one to seal records.
Your outreach to your own state representative and senator over the past year and a half got Raise the Age this far. It's now your legislators' turn to let the conference committee know of their support.
Send a message to your state representative and senator to share with them this exciting update, and give them the information they need to advocate with the conferees.
Raising the Age will position young people to transition into
a successful and productive adulthood, meaningfully participate in our
economy and become a part of the workforce without enduring the
significant barriers posed by criminal records. Read why young people are leading the advocacy for Raise the Age and learn about the Clean Slate campaign.
