Redlands Opposes Book Bans

The Redlands USD school board is still considering banning books (Administrative Regulation 1312.2: Complaints Concerning Instructional Materials). They are expected to discuss it on Tuesday, August 19th (the next board meeting). We need to make it known that Redlands does not support banning books!

As it is currently written, the policy would allow for the district to pull books which have received complaints within 3 days, then have them evaluated. This allows for a loophole to continuously allow a book to be pulled off the shelves, which would result in the banning or unjustified removal of books. It would supersede the expertise and knowledge of librarians and experts who have dedicated their lives to evaluating literature. It allows for the politically motivated few to dictate what is appropriate for the majority of students. There is already a good policy in place that allows any parent to restrict their student from material they feel is harmful.

Please send them an email in opposition and tell your friends to do the same.

We know this is exhausting, but we have to keep up the pressure. So far, we have kept them from passing harmful policies that will bankrupt our schools thanks to YOUR advocacy. Keep it up and share with others!!

Thank you for your support and advocacy. We couldn’t do this without you.
