Reducing Voter Confusion at the Polls

Please contact your representative to urge them to support An Act Clarifying the Role of Governor’s Councillor on the Ballot.

The issue:

Every two years, voters elect the eight members of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council, one from each of eight districts. However, the election ballot identifies the position only as “Councillor” rather than as “Governor’s Councillor.”

The failure to correctly identify the term “Governor’s Councillor” on the ballot is unnecessarily confusing to voters and does not help them understand how important these positions are.

A revision to identify the position of Governor’s Councillor on the ballot can only be accomplished by the Legislature. To that end, An Act Clarifying the Role of Governor’s Councillor on the Ballot has been filed in the House and Senate (S.406 filed by Sen. Michael Barrett and H.665, filed by Rep. Simon Cataldo).

Why:

Your Governor’s Councillor is your elected official who plays a critical role in Massachusetts:
·     In the selection of all the judges and other court personnel
·     In the selection of all the parole board members
·     In the granting of all commutations and pardons
