We have grave concerns about the suspension of a physician, author, and activist Dr. Rupa Marya from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Institutions of medicine and education have a moral and ethical obligation to uphold health, care, justice, accountability, and safety. We can think of no one who has embodied these attributes of care and justice more at your institution than Dr. Marya, who has dedicated her career to improving the health of the most vulnerable communities and advancing the health of all people. Her scholarship evaluates how supremacist logic impacts the health of marginalized people, the exact scholarship that the Trump administration is currently silencing across the academy.

Since November 2023, we have witnessed UCSF harm, harass and defame Dr. Marya in a pattern of racist repression for her principled stance against Israel’s violence in Gaza that has targeted healthcare infrastructure and healthcare workers. Please send a letter to UCSF leadership to demand her reinstatement and to stop this racist repression.
