Take Action: Congress must restore Social Security!

Over the past year, the Trump administration has pushed more than 8,000 workers out at the Social Security Administration and reassigned thousands more away from field office work. The result? A swath of "ghost offices" that are open in name only after being drained of the personnel required to function.

More Perfect Union went to Decorah, Iowa, and visited one of these ghost offices. There was no one there:

Social Security field offices have historically been bustling centers of community support. But now, these offices have been reduced to one or two lonely workers managing the needs of thousands of local residents. Seniors and people with disabilities arrive seeking help with complex claims or urgent benefit needs, but find locked doors, unreachable phone lines, and wait times that stretch on for months.

The Social Security Administration isn’t like other agencies. It receives dedicated funding from all of us, with every paycheck. And it’s always been extraordinarily efficient. Out of every dollar paid in benefits, less than a penny goes to administration. Conversely, private pension plans spend upwards of 15%, and investment-based retirement accounts like 401ks can spend even more. That’s why Wall Street has wanted to destroy Social Security for so long.

Tell Congress: Step in and restore funding and staffing to the Social Security Administration to end "ghost offices" now!
