Rhode Island Needs Equity Impact Statements to Protect our Civil Rights
Across the country, we’re seeing growing attacks on our civil rights. These efforts undermine social justice, restrict our freedoms, and widen the gaps in opportunity and well-being. Rhode Island cannot afford to let harmful legislation slip through without understanding how they impact our communities.
That is why we need Equity Impact Statements. These statements help lawmakers assess how any proposed policy might affect different communities, especially those that have been underserved or unfairly discriminated against in the past. By proactively identifying potential barriers or disproportionate harms, legislators can prevent the implementation of unintentionally harmful laws and develop policies with the intention of improving fairness, reducing disparities, and expanding opportunities for all.
Tell state lawmakers to protect our civil rights by integrating Equity Impact Statements into our legislature and center equity in Rhode Island policymaking.
