Right to Food

In one of the richest countries in the world, over 14 million experience food insecurity. That's about 1 in every 6 people who struggle to afford getting enough to eat. On your street, at your schools, and in your workplace people are relying on foodbanks to get by or just going without.

This is a crisis bourne of inequality. Billionaire wealth in the UK alone has skyrocketed, soaring by over 1000% since 1990. That's come at our expense: their wealth explosion has been driven ever faster by the cost of living crisis giving them the chance to profit from our higher bills, rents, and prices. At a time when billionaires like Jeff Bezos are spending over €200,000 to feed his guests what I'm sure is very nice but surely slightly overpriced pasta in just one meal, the idea of so many people going hungry is abhorrent.

We can do something about it. A coalition of activists, charities and MPs are campaigning for a right to food in the UK. This would make it a government duty to take real action to end hunger through policies like universal free school meals, community kitchens, and independent oversight bodies to hold the government to account.

We're asking you to write to your MP to call on them to join the campaign. We need as many MPs as possible to sign an Early Day Motion in parliament demonstrating support for the right to food work, host workshops in their constituency with people facing food insecurity to properly understand the scale of the crisis, and build support through their own channels.

Use this tool now to send a message to your MP and to this government! Everyone deserves to be able to afford life's essentials and we can get there – all it takes is political choice.
