Urge Congress to Remove Razor wire blocking Umm Al Kheir School, Approve Master Plan & Remove Outposts

On May 20th, working in the overnight hours, Israeli settlers installed 6 new caravans in the settlement outpost inside the village, very close to the children's playground. This outpost now has 12 total caravans, with settlers currently living there and continuing to harass the community of Umm al Kheir. This comes just weeks after settlers installed a caravan across the road from the school, creating yet another new outpost on Umm al Kheir land.

Alarmingly, the children of Umm al Kheir still have their access to their school blocked. On April 12th the security guards from Carmel settlement, next to Umm Al Kheir, placed coils of concertina wire in the village, blocking the children’s path to the school. This was done under the cover of darkness, just before school was set to resume after being closed for nearly 2 months due to the war in the region. The children of Umm Al Kheir have walked this path to school for 50 years, and their new route takes them dangerously close to the settlement outposts. Congress must act now to restore Umm Al Kheir’s right to an education.

Meanwhile, the village's master plan was reviewed on April 28th, and this could provide the opportunity for Umm al Kheir to plan for their future, as all communities should. The village now must wait for the response from the court, which is expected at any time.

Now is the time to press Congress to assure the safety of Umm Al Kheir and restore their children’s right to an education.
