Here are the facts: We have endured years of attacks on disability services in NYS. Cuts to services, enrollment caps on programs, and changes to eligibility criteria – to name only a few. In a state as progressive and forward as New York, this administration continues to implement policy behind closed doors that perpetuate harm and violence. The disability community continues to be blamed for some “rising” Medicaid costs, as if healthcare and survival are an affront to the public. Meanwhile, the very players that mismanage this system and directly contribute to public health crises continue to remain unscathed.

Why should I get involved? This is about something much bigger than us as individuals. We are all vulnerable to the frailty of the human body. A functioning society acknowledges this and constructs social service systems that are ready to support the aging population. Instead, we live in a dystopian nightmare that continues to deny this reality and construct a society of exclusion. Everyone deserves to age with comfort knowing that services will be readily available when they need them. This was never an "us" versus "them" issue -- disability services affect US ALL.
