Save Silver Lake!

Silver Lake
Galina Chernaya

Anyone who has visited Silver Lake on a peaceful afternoon or evening, enchanted by the songs of its resident loons, knows that this beautiful place in the Green Mountain National Forest's Moosalamoo National Recreation Area is something special; something entirely different from most ponds and lakes around Vermont.

For decades, Vermonters and visitors of all walks of life have come to Silver Lake for its quiet beauty, undeveloped shoreline, and relatively easy access for a backcountry experience. A short trail leads day trippers and overnight campers to another world where the rhythms and cycles of wild nature are the only forms of time that matter.

All of this could soon change. Silver Lake is in danger. The Green Mountain National Forest, at the request of the Vermont Huts Association and Moosalamoo Association, is proposing a two-story building for year-round rental at Silver Lake.

Without any attempt at collaboration, and not even a single public meeting to gather input or feedback before launching their plan, the promoters of this development have instead chosen to steamroll other Silver Lake stakeholders and concerned citizens. The Green Mountain National Forest's decision to skip an Environmental Assessment in favor of a cursory Categorical Exclusion means that there will be no substantive review of impacts to the ecology of Silver Lake or the recreating public.

There is precious little time to weigh in and stop this threat to Silver Lake. Please sign and submit a comment to officials at the Green Mountain National Forest by July 11th, and help us keep Silver Lake the way it is!

Thanks,

Friends of Silver Lake and Standing Trees
