The DNR is trying to log 70 acres of mature forest in Kitsap County’s Green Mountain State Forest. Last month, Kitsap County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) wrote a powerful letter asking DNR to remove unit 1 from the Breaking Bud Timber Sale. DNR should honor this request and stop this timber sale immediately. Breaking Bud has not yet been approved by DNR, so we have a great opportunity to get it canceled!

Unit 1 of the Breaking Bud contains many western red cedar and Douglas fir trees over forty inches in diameter. Logging this forest would have a significant negative impact on recreation, as many trails run through it. Green Mountain is an important ecological refuge for residents of Kitsap County; clearcutting its mature forests and turning them into tree plantations goes against the recreation, cultural, and environmental needs of Kitsap County residents.

DNR is accepting public comments for this sale through January 10th. Please take 1 minute to send this pre-written comment to DNR urging them to remove unit 1 from Breaking Bud. It has an even greater impact if you can add a sentence or two saying why you care about protecting mature forests and/or Green Mountain from being clearcut. A few months ago, we sent over 2,000 emails and successfully canceled the “Wishbone” timber sale in King County. Let’s try to double that by sharing this campaign with our friends and family who love forests!
