Say No to the Charter Public School Moratorium

Stop the Wait RI: 88% of Rhode Island voters say families should choose. Vote NO on H7415 and S2787.

Tell RI legislators: vote NO on H7415 and S2787.

Every Rhode Island family deserves the chance to send their child to the right public school — one that fosters belonging, growth, and opportunity. House Bill 7415 and Senate Bill 2787 would slam that door shut.

What these bills actually do:

  • Impose a three-year suspension on the establishment of any new charter public schools and on adding new seats to existing ones.
  • Permanently lower the statewide cap from 35 to 25 — closing future opportunities indefinitely.
  • Renege on two charter public schools that have already cleared the state’s rigorous approval process — the planned expansion of The Greene School and the new De La Comunidad Bilingual School. These bills would override the work of students, educators, and community members, and override the Council of Elementary and Secondary Education’s own approval.

The data is clear — and parents feel it most strongly:

  • 88% of RI voters say families should be able to choose which type of public school best meets their child’s needs (district, charter, or career and technical). Among parents with K-12 children, that’s 89%.
  • 63% of K-12 parents oppose the proposed moratorium
  • 83% of Latino K-12 parents support expanding charter public schools
  • 69% of all RI voters say removing charter public schools would harm public education in Rhode Island

This bill is more than a pause. It’s a shutdown — clawing back seats families have already been promised, and removing opportunity for thousands more searching for a public school that fits their child.

Sign below to send State Representative and State Senator bill sponsors, education committee members, and Governor McKee a letter telling them to vote NO on H7415 and S2787. They need to hear voices from Rhode Island families right now.
