Say NO to the Current MSMX Proposal — Protect the Garment District

Pooja Patel, USA 829, IATSE

For generations, the Garment District has been home to businesses that manufacture custom gloves and hats to those that sell buttons, fabric, and so much more. Garment District businesses, through their work with the fashion and entertainment industries, help generate billions within the New York economy.

The NYFWDC coalition — consisting of Garment District businesses, labor unions, industry stakeholders, and their allies, is advocating for our voices to be heard in the process. We support the city’s goal of expanding housing opportunities and bringing renewed energy to Midtown South, and we share the commitment to creating a more equitable, vibrant, and inclusive future for the city.

The current MSMX proposal endangers nearly 800 small businesses and over 5000 garment workers.  With the right guardrails in place, the MSMX plan can serve both housing and industry—preserving local jobs, legacy skills, and the infrastructure that enables innovation. We deserve a voice in the future of the district because it’s our home too.
