Tell Senate President Kathleen Passidomo: STOP HB 7 / SB 300!

Extremists in Florida’s legislature have proposed House Bill 7 / Senate Bill 300, a bill that would ban abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy as calculated by the first day of the last menstrual cycle.

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo has the power to STOP THIS BAN.

SB 300 is a clear violation of Floridians’ dignity and bodily autonomy, endangering our families, our health, and our lives. In states with abortion bans, maternal mortality rates increase 6 times.

Floridians already face burdensome restrictions to getting an abortion — such as a ban on insurance plans on the state exchange covering abortion; a parental consent requirement that makes it harder for young people to get abortions; and a law that requires people to make an additional, unnecessary trip to an abortion provider before receiving care, which took effect in April 2022.

There are also many other barriers to access for people who need abortion care, including: delays in finding out they’re pregnant; difficulty affording essential health care; and a lack of nearby providers.

Abortion bans are designed to force Floridians to remain pregnant against their will, violating their dignity and bodily autonomy, and endangering their families, their health, and even their lives. The impacts of pushing reproductive health care out of reach in the middle of a maternal mortality crisis will fall hardest on Black Floridians, who are nearly 3 times more likely than white Floridians to die during childbirth, or shortly after.

A 6 week ban leaves little or no time for someone who notices their period is late to access abortion healthcare. Furthermore, determining fetal gestation based on the first day of the last menstrual cycle is not scientifically accurate. This ban will also impact people who are only 4 or 5 weeks pregnant in reality.

We strongly oppose SB 300 and call on all supporters of reproductive freedom to do the same. The state has no business interfering with anyone’s healthcare decisions. Period.
