Send Social Studies Standards Back to the Board of Education

Secret Social Studies Standards Should be Sent Back to the Board of Education

The newly proposed Oklahoma Social Studies Standards sent to the legislature were secretly revised after public review. The changed standards include questionable topics like 2020 election "discrepancies," the source of COVID-19, and Biblical references. Members of the State Board of Education voted on the standards without being told of the changes. They have since requested that the standards be returned to the Board for further review.

After weeks of inaction, the legislature has finally taken steps to correct this situation. Senate Joint Resolution 20 specifically disapproves the Standards. If passed, the Standards would be sent back to the State Board of Education for review, revision, and replacement.

The leaders of the House and Senate must allow a vote on the floor of each chamber by Thursday, May 1st.

It's time to pressure our leaders to operate in the light. Educational academic standards must be publicly reviewed by law -- not quietly altered behind closed doors and then deceptively voted upon without even informing board members of changes. We must demand transparency and adherence to the law!
