It's the wrong response to send police to people in a mental health crisis.
It's led to possibly avoidable police killings, our loved ones are being stolen from us.
EMS has an MHART (Mental Health and Addictions Response Team) that already takes 911 calls.
They are separate from paramedics backed up in hospitals.
In 2019 they were able to reduce ambulance calls by 5% by talking people down from crisis.
If they can reduce ambulance calls they can reduce police calls.
Ask Niagara Regional Councillors to ask the police to figure out how many calls can go to EMS instead.
Mental health and welfare check calls were just under 10% of police calls in 2019.
Shift those calls and the money that goes with them to MHART which is funded by community groups.
This won't increase taxes and could lower them as EMS is cheaper than police.
If MHART won't work then Regional Council can come up with an alternative.
Even if it's “easier said than done” it still needs to be done.
Get Regional Council to make the right choice, shift mental health and welfare check calls from the police to EMS and MHART.
