Demand Fair Maps Now

Ohioans deserve a transparent, fair redistricting process. The state legislature missed its September 30 constitutional deadline to pass a new congressional map with bipartisan support, but failed to even propose a map. Now the process moves to the Ohio Redistricting Commission which has to introduce a map and hold two public hearings and a vote before October 31 according to the Ohio constitution:

(E) If a congressional district plan is not passed not later than the last day of September of the year after the year in which a plan expires under division (C)(3)(e) of this section and filed with the secretary of state in accordance with Section 16 of Article II of this constitution, then the Ohio redistricting commission described in Article XI of this constitution shall be reconstituted and reconvene and shall adopt a congressional district plan not later than the last day of October of that year by the affirmative vote of four members of the commission, including at least two members of the commission who represent each of the two largest political parties represented in the general assembly. A congressional district plan adopted under this division shall take effect upon filing with the secretary of state and shall remain effective until the next year ending in the numeral one, except as provided in Section 3 of this article. If officials are serious about holding a fair process, they should introduce their proposed map now and give the public an opportunity to testify before the deadline. Otherwise, the only conclusion is that our elected leaders intend to run out the clock, blow past the deadline, and ram through a partisan gerrymander in November.

Tell Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission to do their jobs, honor their oath and convene the Commission to let Ohioans be heard.
