Sign and send a letter to your U.S. senators: Oppose E.J. Antoni, Trump's pick to run the Bureau of Labor Statistics

On Monday, August 11, Donald Trump nominated E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the Heritage Foundation and contributor to Project 2025, to run the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The opening became vacant after Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday, August 1 for releasing a jobs report that Trump didn't like. Without any evidence, Trump claimed the report was "rigged."

Antoni has been widely described even by conservative economists as unfit for the job. On Tuesday, August 12, Axios compiled a short list of four prominent conservatives who described Antoni's work as frequently including "elementary errors or nonsensical choices," and as "the most error-filled of any think tank economist right now." Antoni himself was described as "unqualified," as demonstrating an "inability to understand basic economics" and as having "gone MAGA." He is also facing accusations as having participated in the January 6, 2021 protests against the certification of the 2020 presidential election–which he denies--although not of actually entering the Capitol.

For the good of our economy, we need accurate, unbiased economic statistics that policymakers, businesses and investors can trust. As such, all U.S. senators should oppose Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We would be better off just having the acting commissioner, Bill Wiatrowski, who has run the BLS during Donald Trump's first term, continue to run the department indefinitely.
