Sign and send a petition to your member of the House of Representatives: Vote to override Donald Trump's vindictive vetoes of two uncontroversial, bipartisan bills.
Back on New Year's Eve, Donald Trump issued the first two vetoes of his second term. Both of the bills he vetoed, the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act and the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act, were uncontroversial, bipartisan, and passed both chambers of Congress without any objection.
Trump's reasons for voting these bills were predictably vindictive. He vetoed the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act to punish Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis over his refusal to release Tina Peters from jail, and he vetoed the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act over the tribe's participation in a lawsuit against the Trump administration. Neither reason had anything to do with the substance of the bills whatsoever.
Now, the House of Representatives is looking to override both of Trump's vetoes, and there is a good chance they will succeed. Both of these were bills sponsored by Republicans, and passed through Congress without a single objection.
Veto overrides are quite rare, with only 112 taking place in the entire history of the United States, or roughly one every two years. Since 1989, there have only been nine veto overrides, or one every four years. If Trump suffers two veto overrides so early in his second term, it would be a major blow to his prestige and political power.
The votes will take place on Thursday. Imagine how lovely it would be to see Trump taken down a peg or two by the overwhelming majority of Congress.
