California has a chance to make elections about ideas, not money — but the clock is ticking.
The California Fair Elections Act (SB 42) is in committee right now, and if it dies here, voters won’t even get to decide.
Last year, billionaires spent $2.6 billion to influence elections nationwide — drowning out the voices of everyday voters.
Across the country, 14 states and 26 municipalities already have public financing systems with proven benefits that:
- Empower voters: Put people’s voices ahead of big donors.
- Help candidates compete: Give every qualified candidate a fair shot — even against billionaire‑backed opponents.
- Refocus time: Let officials spend more time serving the public, not chasing Big Money.
Seattle voters just reaffirmed their popular Democracy Voucher program, underscoring that public financing works and is popular in practice.
California is up next: The California Fair Elections Act, SB 42, will put a measure on the November 2026 ballot. It will let voters decide to repeal the ban on public financing of campaigns so any local government — the state itself — can amplify the voices of everyday voters and ensure elections are won, not bought!
SB 42 now faces it's final Assembly vote in the next two weeks. That's why we need you to act now.
IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA: SIGN THE PETITION to tell your Assemblymember to vote "Yes" on SB 42! The petition drafts a message to your Assemblymember you can edit before we send for you.
