HB 1017 would allow school boards to move certain students into “alternative settings” because of behavior concerns.

We all want safe schools. But we also want schools where students are supported, not pushed out.

Policies like this can have unintended consequences, especially for students with disabilities, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other youth who already face barriers. Before expanding removals from the classroom, we should be investing in support, prevention, and belonging.

Our children deserve both safety and fairness.
