Flor Paz, Angel Doval and Douglas Rojas-Sosa are members of One Herald Guild, the labor union that represents workers at el Nuevo Herald and the Miami Herald.

But our company is attempting to strip Flor, Angel and Douglas of their legal rights by refusing to recognize them as members of OHG.

It seems management is trying to use them as bargaining chips during our contract negotiations to extract concessions from us — while we fight for issues like fair pay, parental leave and protections for strong local journalism.

Let us be clear: Flor, Angel and Douglas are not bargaining chips.

They are our colleagues. They are our friends. They are members of One Herald Guild under the definition of our union membership certified by the National Labor Relations Board. And they have rights under federal law.  

The McClatchy Company, which owns el Nuevo and the Miami Herald, must respect those rights.

Flor is an online producer for el Nuevo who makes sure our website is up to date, giving you the latest news you need to stay informed about our community. Angel is a newsroom assistant who keeps our busy shop running smoothly and helps readers who need assistance. Douglas is a copy editor who ensures our pages are clean, clear and accurate.

Management has already backed down once over a similar issue.

In November, the Herald tried to stop five people from having their ballots counted, including two of our best-known employees, columnists Carl Hiaasen and Leonard Pitts, in addition to Flor, Angel and Douglas. But management quickly folded after media coverage of the company excluding two writers with national name recognition. They said they understood that Carl and Leonard deserved recognition under the law.

They promised they would address Flor, Angel and Douglas' situation, too.

They haven't lived up to that promise — because they think the public isn't watching.

Just because Flor, Angel and Douglas aren't household names doesn't mean they are any less important to el Nuevo and the Herald. We couldn't do our jobs without them.

Before the McClatchy family cedes control of the company to a hedge fund, it has the opportunity to do the right thing for the future of our newsroom by officially acknowledging Flor, Angel and Douglas as members of the union.

During bankruptcy, Flor, Angel and Douglas deserve all the protections of federal law, just like Carl and Leonard, and just like all 100 members of One Herald Guild.

Please join us in demanding that McClatchy stop violating our colleagues' rights. You can do so by writing to McClatchy's top managers. Let them know you won't support a company that treats employees this way.

In the meantime, Flor, Angel and Douglas, and all the rest of us, will be hard at work bringing you the news.

La gerencia ya ha cambiado de opinión una vez por un problema similar.

En noviembre, el Herald trató de evitar que contaran los votos de cinco personas, incluyendo a dos de nuestros empleados más reconocidos, los columnistas Carl Hiaasen y Leonard Pitts Jr., además de Flor, Angel y Douglas. Pero la gerencia dejó de oponerse rápidamente después de la presión que recibió la compañía al saber que estaba excluyendo a dos escritores reconocidos nacionalmente. En ese momento, dijeron que entendían que Carl y Leonard merecían el reconocimiento bajo la ley de ser parte del sindicato.

Prometieron que también examinarían la situación de Flor, Angel y Douglas.

No han cumplido esa promesa, porque piensan que el público no está pendiente.

El hecho de que Flor, Angel y Douglas no sean nombres conocidos no significa que sean menos importantes para el Nuevo y el Herald. No podríamos hacer nuestro trabajo sin ellos.

Antes de que la familia McClatchy ceda el control de la compañía a un fondo de cobertura, tiene la oportunidad de hacer lo correcto para el futuro de nuestra sala de redacción al reconocer oficialmente a Flor, Angel y Douglas como miembros del sindicato.
